Wiring Protection Guide — Loom Tape vs Electrical Tape vs Heat Shrink

The Three Main Wiring Protection Options

Automotive wiring needs protection from heat, abrasion, vibration, moisture, and UV exposure. The right product depends on whether you're protecting individual wires, bundling a harness, or insulating a connection.

Wiring Loom Tape (Cloth Harness Tape)

Wiring loom tape is the fleece-backed, self-fusing cloth tape used by vehicle manufacturers to bundle and protect wiring harnesses. It's the same tape wrapped around the factory wiring loom in your car.

When to use it:

  • Bundling multiple wires into a neat harness
  • Protecting wire bundles from abrasion against body panels or brackets
  • Replacing worn or damaged factory loom wrapping

Key features:

  • Self-fusing — wraps firmly without adhesive bleed
  • Absorbs vibration — deadens wire-to-body noise
  • Hand tearable — no scissors needed
  • Heat resistant to 105°C
  • Available in 9mm, 15mm, 19mm, and 25mm widths

Wrap the tape around the wire bundle at a slight angle, overlapping each layer by about 50%. The tape grips itself and won't unravel.

High-Temperature Rubber Electrical Tape

Rubber electrical tape provides electrical insulation and moisture resistance. Unlike standard PVC tape, rubber-based tape handles sustained heat — important in engine bays and near exhausts.

When to use it:

  • Insulating wire connections and splices
  • Wrapping individual wires that run near heat sources
  • General electrical insulation

Key features:

  • Rated to 80°C+ continuous
  • Rubber adhesive maintains grip in heat and cold
  • Flexible — won't crack in cold weather
  • Suitable for 12V–600V electrical insulation

Important: Don't use standard PVC tape near engines or hot surfaces. It softens, unravels, and loses its insulation properties in heat.

Heat Shrink Tubing

Heat shrink tubing is the cleanest way to insulate individual wire connections, splices, and solder joints. Apply the tube over the connection, apply heat, and it shrinks to conform tightly to the wire.

When to use it:

  • Covering solder joints and splice connections
  • Protecting the ends of cut wires
  • Adding abrasion resistance to individual wires

2:1 vs 3:1 ratio:

  • 2:1 shrinks to half its original diameter — suits most connections
  • 3:1 shrinks to a third — better for irregular shapes and larger diameter differences
