Deutsch DT Connector Guide — Wiring, Pin Sizes and IP67 Explained
Share
What Are Deutsch DT Connectors?
Deutsch DT-style connectors are sealed multi-pin connectors used in automotive, marine, agricultural, and industrial wiring where a reliable, waterproof connection is non-negotiable. They are now the global standard for harsh-environment wiring harnesses.
The DT range uses Size 16 contacts sized for wire from 14 to 20 AWG, in a grey glass-filled nylon housing with an integrated wedgelock that locks the contacts in place once inserted.
IP67 Waterproofing — What Does It Mean?
IP67 is an ingress protection rating that means the connector is:
- Dust tight — total protection against dust ingress
- Waterproof to 1 metre for 30 minutes — full immersion protection
For automotive and marine wiring, IP67 means these connectors can handle rain, pressure washing, submersion, and years of moisture exposure without failing.
DT Connector Pin Configurations
| Pins | Typical Application |
|---|---|
| 2-pin | Simple switched circuits, actuators, sensors |
| 3-pin | Sensors with power, ground, and signal |
| 4-pin | Dual-circuit connections, fans, pumps |
| 6-pin | Complex sensor clusters, trailer connections |
| 8-pin | Wiring harness breakouts, lighting arrays |
| 12-pin | Multi-function harnesses, ECU connections |
How to Crimp DT Connector Contacts Correctly
DT connectors use Size 16 closed-barrel contacts and require a specific ratchet crimp tool. Using the wrong tool results in a poor crimp that will fail over time.
Step 1 — Strip the wire
Strip 5–6mm of insulation from the wire end. Don't nick the conductor strands.
Step 2 — Select the contact
Choose a pin (male) or socket (female) contact for Size 16 wire.
Step 3 — Position in the crimp tool
Place the contact in the correct die position at the 16 AWG setting.
Step 4 — Insert the wire and crimp
Insert the stripped wire fully into the contact barrel. Squeeze the crimp tool handles until the ratchet releases.
Step 5 — Pull-test
Pull the wire firmly. A correct crimp will not pull out. If it does, start again.
Step 6 — Insert into housing
Push the contact into the connector housing from the rear until you hear a click. Insert the wedgelock from the front to lock all contacts in place.
DT Connectors vs Standard Automotive Connectors
| Feature | DT-Style Connector | Standard Spade/Bullet |
|---|---|---|
| IP Rating | IP67 (waterproof) | None |
| Retention | Wedgelock + contact lock | Friction only |
| Vibration resistance | Excellent | Poor |
| Marine use | Yes | Not recommended |
| Motorsport use | Yes | Not recommended |
